Or why Ericeira is a World Surfing Reserve

Ribeira d’Ilhas

Easily Ericeira’s most accessible reef, Ribeira D’Ilhas dishes out super long right-hand point break walls that not only offer up barrels, but big shoulders to practice your turns.

Due to the quality and consistency of the wave and the top quality amenities, Ribeira D”Ilhas hosts many professional competitions. Also, the facilities are great and the beach is a popular hang-out.

The surrounding beach area was developed in late 2008 and offers all the amenities that you need for a day at the beach, including a variety of coffees that serve delicious food and drinks, perfect spots to refuel in between sessions. It’s a good place to launch your kite too.

The break offers both left and right walls that wall up slowly before gaining speed on the inside, which makes Praia do Sul one of the best spots for beginner surfers.

Great amenities such as food kiosks, cafés and restaurants make this beach a great location to spend a day or two while staying in Ericeira

And if you like skate you’ll love Matadouro too because there’s a skate park overlooking the break, giving you the chance to shred the concrete between surfing sessions.

Pedra Branca

Pedra Branca is a very powerful left-hand reef break that offers one of the hollowest tubes in Ericeira. All you need to do is get to your feet and pull in and cut out for one of the rides of your life. But it’s easier to say than do. You can get the wipe-out of your life if you don’t have enough speed.

Pedra Branca is simply pure tube-riding and speed… there’s only a catch: it`s a potential flat spot at low tide.

Cave

Holly ground for experienced and professional surfers, Cave is often compared to Australia’s Shark Island and it’s easy to understand why!

A right-hand reef break comes out of deep water before hitting an extremely shallow reef ledge, creating double up waves as thick as hollow, before going dry on the end section. It dishes out some of the biggest spitting barrels in Portugal as well as some of the worst wipe-outs.

Coxos

On the bucket list of every experienced surfer, Coxos is not only one of the best waves in Portugal but also one of the best right handers in the world, famous for its mesmerizing big barrels and leg-aching rides.

Groundswells roll into the small bay and unload on a reef bottom, often with fierce power. The wave changes according to swell direction, period and wind direction, but is always fun.

São Lourenço

São Lourenço is a beautiful sandy beach with multiple peaks offering heavy left and right walls. Towards the northern end you’ll find a right-hand reef that when a large swell is running can produce one of Portugal’s heaviest and best waves.

São Lourenço is challenging for even the most hardcore chargers on big N/NW days. The Stormrider’s Guide nicknames this break as “the Portuguese version of Sunset” and that tells you a lot about what to expect.

Reef

As the name suggests, this wave breaks over a shallow flat reef and produces a powerful right-hand with awesome tubes. The waves are fast, there’s no time for cutbacks or tricks – Reef is pure tube-riding and speed!

Reef can be absolutely magical, but it can also leave wounds. If you’re a beginner surfer we don´t recommend it, it requires some level of experience.

There’s no beach break and usually closes out on a westerly wind. Beware of urchins, rocks and rips.

Crazy Left

The name says it all: it comes from the left and… it’s crazy! Located on the south side of the Bay of Coxos, is a very different wave: shorter and a left-hander with a few sections for big turns as well as some deep tubes. It works best on higher tide whilst Coxos is better on low tides, which is great!

The wave is not easy and the spot can become very crowded on epic days. If you aren’t an experienced surfer, it’s probably better to choose another spot.

Praia do Peixe (Fish Beach) is a sheltered beach break awesome for beginner surfers, although it can be a little flat and crowded during the summer months. It offers both left and right-hand waves, just as likely from local windswells as from distant groundswells. The best swell angle is from the southwest.

The jetty provides shelter from the big sneaky waves and you will see the awesome views of the Ericeira fishing port.
